Main Menu
The main navigation bar links to the five sections of the site - Awards, About SHAW, Support, SMEs and Links. Each link becomes a 'tab' when clicked, to show you are inside that section, and its section menu then appears in a blue band below it.
Above is an image of how the main menu looks in the Awards section
Section Menus
There are five different section menus - one for each of the sections mentioned above. The white text links go to pages relating to the section topic. If any of the links appear slightly faded it means you have already clicked them.
Page Links
Most links within a page are underlined pieces of blue text which, in up-to-date browsers, turn orange when you put the cursor over them. For a demonstration see this dummy link (it doesn't lead anywhere, it's just an example). Once you have clicked the link it will turn light blue to show it is has been activated. After you click elsewhere it will turn grey to show you have already tried it.
Images with a shadow on their right-hand and bottom edge are links. One example of these "buttons" are the pictures on the right of each section page which let you "jump" into other sections. These stay the same whether you have clicked them or not.
Page Sub-menus
When there is more than one page relating to a topic page menus are used to navigate between them. These take a few different forms:
Bullet Point lists
If you click a link in a section menu you may find a menu made up of bullet points, like this example:-
These usually offer a choice of sub-pages on different related subjects.
Sub-page lists
If you click a link in a bullet point list you may find a subpage menu headed "Related pages:" in white on a blue band. The links which appear under this are the other choices from the bullet point list. This is to allow you to "jump" between these pages without having to go back to the original menu.
'Back' links
Other pages have a simple 'back' link to let you return to the original menu.
Numbered Paging
Some pages have numbered page links to allow you to "jump" back and forward within a sequence of related pages. These links always appear near the bottom right of a table or block of text.
"Jump" Links
Not all links take you straight to the top of a different page. Some let you "jump" further down a page, such as a 'Contents' link, or up like a 'back to top of page' link.
Other links let you "jump" to the middle of a different page. When this happens and you want to return to the main or section menus simply 'scroll' to the top of the page. (To do this click on the 'scrollbar', on the right of the window, and hold down the mouse button. Keeping it held down, move the 'scrollbar' as far up as it will go and release. You will see the usual page header and menu(s) to navigate with.)
'Email this page' Link
Near the bottom of left of some pages is an 'Email this page' link. Clicking this link will take you to a form which allows you to send the address of your chosen page to an email address. This site does not record the details you enter.
Toolbar Links
These appear below the blue line at the bottom of each page. The Search box links to a search facility. Most of the other links go to information pages about the site or the homepage. The exception to this is the 'Other SHOW Sites' link which leads to the homepage of our site hosts Scotland's Health on the Web. This and the other links in capital letters are part of the SHOW toolbar and do not change colour like the other text links on the site. To find out about the 'Bobby Approved' button please see the Accessibility page.
Downloading Files
Links with a file icon next to them (eg.
/
)
go to Adobe PDF or MS Word files instead of a web page. You will also be
able to recognise these links by the brackets next to them - like this: (74KB).
The number tells you the filesize (how much disk space the file takes up)
in kilobytes. If you click a link to a Word document you will be prompted
to open or save the file. Saving is best.
For PDFs you can click the link as normal to open the file inside your browser. If this doesn't work it may mean you need to download the (free) Adobe Reader software. Instead of opening a PDF you can also save it as follows:
PC users:
Click the link with the right-hand mouse button (this is known as "right-clicking")
so a small menu appears. Then click, with the regular mouse button, the choice
'Save Target As...'. In the window which appears navigate to where you want
to put the file on your disk and click 'Save'.
Mac users:
Click and hold down the mouse button until a small menu appears then select
'Download Link to Disk' and let the button go. In the window which appears
navigate to where you want to put the file on your disk and click 'Save'.
Printing Pages
This site has been designed so only the main text of a page is printed out. Navigation menus, and other items not needed in a printed copy, are filtered out. In browsers like Internet Explorer 5 you should be able to do a 'Print Preview' to see what your printed page will look like. If you have any issues regarding printing (which are not to do with your computer setup or printer model) please let us know by using the feedback form.
